Workshop Held On: May 04, 2011

Eating disorders affect about 8 million Americans and have the highest mortality rate of any mental health problem. A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, but at some point, the urge to eat less or more spirals out of control.

Eating disorders are commonly thought of as a woman's disorder, but an increasing number of men suffer from eating disorders. Instead of using laxatives and purgatives, men are more likely to exercise obsessively. "Manorexia" is the term actor Dennis Quaid used to describe his food struggle. Elton John has said he suffered from bulimia.

Psychological and medicinal treatments are effective for many eating disorders. Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa (2 types), bulimia nervosa (2 types), binge eating disorder, nighttime eating syndrome, and sleep-related eating disorder.
